SUMMERVILLE RESIDENCE

Located at 205 Sumter Street in Summerville, South Carolina, this residence dates back to the 1880s, with an addition estimated to have been constructed near or before 1930. Simons Young + associates’ work involved removing an addition from the 1980’s that obscured the original footprint of the historic home. SY+a designed an addition connecting the historic house gently with glass hyphens, allowing the original form to be preserved and remain visible from the exterior. These hyphens create a double height canyon which allows light to flood the historic home. The addition allowed SY+a to open up the floor plan of the historic house. This restored the floor plan to its original configuration and opened up the stair hall, circulating light and air throughout the historic home.
